Chargers Tame Wolves In Road Twinbill

Carrollton, Ga. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team swept its Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at West Georgia as the Chargers ran away with an 8-1 decision in game one at Cole Field before the using an 8-run fifth inning to grab a 10-4 victory in the nightcap.
 
After the day, UAH improves to 20-16 overall and 9-5 in the conference while UWG drops to 17-14 on the season and 8-6 in league play.
 
The two teams return to the diamond Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon CDT.
 
GAME ONE
 
After surrendering an early run to West Georgia in the third inning, the Chargers came through with three runs in the sixth and five runs in the ninth to seal the 8-1 victory in game one.
 
Four Chargers notched two hits in the game, but the highlight of the game came in the ninth inning for UAH when Justin Riddle hit the team's first grand slam of the year. Riddle pushed his second homer of the year over the right field wall to plate four RBI. It is the first grand slam by a Chargers since Eric Deese connected on April 10, 2011 against Valdosta State last season. UAH scored again in the inning after Eric Deese legged out a double, and then scored on a throwing error by the second baseman.
 
UWG opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning after a leadoff single by Marquise Vialet who was then moved over by a sac bunt. Vialet then scored as the very next batter laced a single through the right side to give UWG a 1-0 advantage.
 
The 1-0 lead lasted just three innings as UAH crossed three runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Jon McKinney got the scoring started for UAH with a solo home run over the left field wall on a 3-1 count. It was his first homer of the year, and second of his career at UAH.
 
Drew Eiland (4-2) picked up the victory after working 7.1 solid innings, allowing just one run on eight hits while striking out two. Cody Barrett relieved Eiland and worked the scoreless 1.2 remaining frames, while allowing just one hit and striking out one batter.
 
GAME TWO
 
Using an eight-run fifth inning, UAH dropped the Wolves in the second game by a score of 10-4. With the win, the Chargers notched their third GSC series victory of the season.
 
UAH led 2-0 through three innings after scoring one run in the second and third innings, but the Wolves answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead 4-2.
 
The Chargers responded with an eight-run fifth frame – the most runs UAH has scored in a single inning this year. UAH scored the runs on five hits, four walks and one error by UWG.
 
Picking up the victory for UAH was Dana Wright (3-3) who hurled 4.0 innings, allowing four runs – three earned – on four hits and one walk while striking out two. Johnny Shuttlesworth earned his first save of the year while working the final 3.0 innings. Shuttlesworth fanned three batters and allowed no runs on just two hits.
