HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team used an eight-run third inning and a greedy pitching staff to blank Alabama A&M, 15-0, on Tuesday night at Charger Park. With the win, the Chargers improve to 25-19 overall, and 18-1 all-time against A&M, while the Bulldogs drop to 8-31 on the year.
The 15-0 shutout victory marked the fourth clean sheet for the UAH pitching staff this season, and the third-most shutouts in a single season since the program's inception in 1996. The 1996 squad posted six shutouts, while the 1997 squad posted five shutouts and the 2002 and 2003 teams completed four shutouts.
Starting on the hill and earning the victory for UAH was Willard Bacon (3-2) who worked 4.0 innings, allowing just two hits, one walk and fanned three batters. Luke Mould pitched 3.0 innings and allowed four hits while striking out four. Zach Adams and Kyle Jeter came in to work 1.0 inning each, sitting down one and two batters on strikes, respectively.
In addition, the 15 runs ties a season-high for UAH runs, equaling the total set against visiting Kentucky State on March 13. The scoring effort was paced by five Chargers with at least two hits, led by Chandler Brock's career-best 3-for-5 night. Ty Chancelor, Eddie Villalta,
Tyrone Smith and Blake Massey all notched two hits, while Grant DeBruin contributed with a triple as his lone hit, which scored three runs.
On the very first pitch of the third inning, Chancelor blasted his seventh home run of the season, and second in three games, over the left field wall, giving UAH a 3-0 lead and jumpstarting the eight-run frame. DeBruin brought in the last three runs of the inning on a loaded-bases triple over the centerfielder's head in right centerfield.
Over the course of the night, Alabama A&M plagued itself with six errors, though 12 of the 15 UAH runs were still earned runs. The Chargers finished the night with more runs (15) than hits (14).
UAH next welcomes Miles to Charger Park for the second of a single game, home-and-home, non-conference series this season. First pitch of the contest is slated for 2 p.m. CDT.
