Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Lady Chargers stormed back on Saturday afternoon, knocking off West Alabama at Spragins Hall after falling behind two sets to none.
UAH (6-6, 1-2 GSC) was all but dead after the first two sets, but that didn't stop them from rallying back to take the final three sets and earn their first conference win of the season.
It looked as though there was a different team wearing black in the final sets, as head coach
Laura Taube's squad played with energy and passion.
The host Chargers would go quietly in the first two sets, falling 25-15 in the first set and 25-11 in the second.
The third set would prove to be the most crucial, as UAH extended the match to a fourth set prevailing 25-20.
The set was back-and-forth throughout, until the Lady Chargers took an 18-14 lead late in the set. Sparked by
Stacey Sargent and
Erin Keeney, the UAH defense was at the top of its game to put away the visiting Tigers.
UAH would take control late and never look back, as
Kennedie Lariscy finished an unconventional kill to end the third set in their favor.
The Lady Chargers left no doubt in the fourth set that they would not give up. Racing out to a 4-0 lead and an eventual 11-3 advantage, UAH dominated the fourth set in every facet of the game.
Kelsey Williams led the way in set number four, as she serviced eight winning points and finished the set with five consecutive winning services.
Headed to the fifth set Spragins Hall came to life, hoping their hometown team would pull out the victory.
The fifth and final set was evenly played until UAH took a 9-3 lead they would not relinquish. Led by
Kirsten Rousseau serving, the Lady Chargers capitalized off West Alabama errors and stout defense by the frontline of UAH.
The Tigers would make things interesting cutting the UAH lead to just 13-11, but the Lady Chargers would score the final two points to take the win.
It was the senior Williams who led the way on Saturday, finishing with a team-high 11 kills, five aces and four blocks. Sargent was also very impressive and her outstanding play stood out. She finished with 11 kills and three blocks.
Haley Snyder played arguably her best game of the season, recording nine kills and a pair of blocks.
Senior
Kelly Wilson was the catalyst to the UAH attack as she finished with 32 assists.
Kennedie Lariscy stepped her game once she was back in the libero spot, digging out 13 potential kills.
The win moves the Lady Chargers back to .500 on the season at 6-6 and also gives them their first GSC win in 2012.
UAH will now look to build on this momentum as they welcome in Stillman on Tuesday, September 25. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
