Winslow Takes First as Cross Country Teams Place Second

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
Junior Vicky Winslow captured her unprecedented fourth-straight individual championship, while the UAH men's and women's cross country teams both placed second Friday at the Florida State Invitational.
 
Junior Blaise Binns paced the Chargers with a second-place finish, clocking in with a time of 25:04.76. Embry-Riddle's Vincent Bett would go on to finish four seconds ahead of Binns to claim the individual title, finishing with a time of 25:00.18
 
Fellow teammate Jose Ortega finished the competition with a time of 25:13.76 to come in fifth. Senior Joey Bemowski produced a 14th-place finish while crossing the finish line with a time of 25:47.37
 
Taylor Buzzard and Daniel Rush both came in the top 40 with respective times of 26:22.05 and 26:36.24.
 
Matt Ursprung and Kenneth Richardson also contributed to the Chargers' second-place finish, clocking in with times of 27:12.59 and 27:12.80.
 
The men weren't able to capture the team title for the fourth time this season, but the solid individual performances did give the Chargers 79 points to finish in second in the 8k event.
 
Florida Southern finished nine points ahead of UAH to capture the team championship as Saint Leo came in third with 90 points, while West Florida and Embry-Riddle ended the day with 91 and 97 points, respectively.
 
Florida A&M claimed the team title among Division I schools with 32 points in the 8k. Florida State finished with 32 points to claim the second spot while Florida Gulf Coast came in third with 61 points.
 
Winslow led the Lady Chargers with a time of 17:56.02 to capture first place for the fourth time this season. Kailey Williams was the next teammate in line as she placed 13th with a time of 18:47.54.
 
Teammate Kasey Spence was two spots (15th) behind while clocking in with a time of 18:55.29. Michelle Kruse (19th; 19:02.02) and Kayla Luechtenfeld (23th; 19:20.46) both finished the day in the top 25.
 
Freshman Alison Jay came in 35th with a solid time of 20:05.21, while Kelsey Crawford and Amber Powell came within the top 45 with times of 20:09.42 and 20:13.13, respectively.
 
Katie Brakke ended the day with a time of 20:57.78, while Katelyn Clarke clocked in at 21:59.45.
 
For the first time this season, the women weren't able to take home the team title as well; however, the Lady Chargers still finished second with 63 points in the 5k event. Tampa went on to capture the title with 40 points while Nova Southeastern (81), Flagler (87) and West Florida (124) rounded out the top five.
 
Host Florida State dominated the 5k event among Division I schools, claiming the team championship with 15 points. South Florida came in second with 80 points while Florida A&M finished with 97 points to come in third.
 
Both teams will return to action in two weeks on Saturday, Oct. 26, when they head to Birmingham, Ala.,  for the Gulf South Conference Championship.
