HOOVER, Ala. - For the first time in school history, the UAH men's and women's cross country teams have swept the Gulf South Conference Championships Saturday morning at Veteran's Park.
The men placed four of the top 10 runners in the 8k to capture their fourth title in school history with 29 points. Junior
Blaise Binns took home his second individual championship with a time of 25:33.25 en route to the Chargers' first-place finish.
West Florida finished 12 points behind UAH with 41 points to come in second while West Alabama (84), Valdosta State (95) and Christian Brothers rounded out the top five with 141 points.
Fellow teammate
Jose Ortega was right behind Binns with a second-place finish on the day. Ortega improved his time from last year by over twenty seconds with a time of 26:05.52.
Joey Bemowski crossed the line with a solid time of 26:26.19 to finish eighth on the day while
Kenny Richardson placed tenth on the day, clocking at 26:30.47.
Both
Alex Gilliland (26:59.36) and
Taylor Buzzard (27:06.46) both finished in the top 25.
Daniel Rush came in 36th on the day with a time of 27:40.87 to contribute to the victory.
Along with
Vicky Winslow's second straight individual conference championship, the women placed four runners in the top 15 to capture the team's fifth championship in program history in the 5k.
The Lady Chargers edged Union by three points to capture the title, finishing with 47 points. Union came in second with 50 points as West Florida (103) and Shorter (136) rounded out the top four finishers.
Winslow paced UAH with a time of 18:20.78 to lead the Lady Chargers to their first-place finish.
Kasey Spence had a solid day on the day, finishing a with a time of 19:10.66 to come in third.
Sophomore
Kayla Luechtefeld clocked in with a time of 19:29.23 to come in 11th. Fellow teammate
Michelle Kruse crossed the finish line with a time of 19:32.67 to place 14th at the end of the day.
Freshman
Kailey Williams also had a solid performance on the day, clocking in at 19:52.05 to finish with the fifth best time on the team and 18th overall.
Amber Powell contributed to the victory with a 28th place finish, clocking in at 20:28.21 while
Kelsey Crawford finished two spots behind with a time of 20:32.95.
Alison Jay rounded out the top 35 with a time of 20:46.78.
Both the men and women will have the week off before they prepare for the NCAA DII South Regional in Tampa, Fla., on Nov. 9.
