Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team's amazing turnaround season came to a close on Friday as the Chargers were defeated 2-0 by West Alabama in the semifinals of the 2013 Gulf South Conference Tournament. UAH ends the season at 10-7-1, while UWA advances to the championship game with an 11-6-1 mark.
After winning just one contest last season and going winless in conference play, the Chargers won 10 games and finished second in the GSC standings.
Under the direction of first-year head coach
Matt Watts, the Blue and White more than doubled the scoring output from a season ago and featured the league's leading scorer in
Kyle Simmons who finished the year with 15 goals which currently ranks as the 11th-best total in Division II.
The impressive turnaround came with a team that featured just one senior, and three of top four players in minutes were underclassmen.
On Friday, it was a pair of goals within a span of 15 minutes that proved the difference as UWA's Vitor Gazza scored both for the Tigers.
The first score came just prior to the halftime break as Gazza stole the ball and deposited it in the back of the net in the 42nd minute to make it 1-0, and he scored just over 11 minutes into the second half in the 57th minute of the contest.
UWA held a 13-8 advantage in shots and a wide 9-2 margin in shots on goal as UAH keeper
Brent DeSilva made seven stops.
The Tigers also took eight corner kicks to UAH's six.
