Chargers Host Kentucky State in Cold Weekend Series

LIVE STATS
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. –
The season is officially underway for the University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team as they look to continue their strong momentum in this early portion of the season this Friday and Saturday at Charger Park.

Coming to town will be the Kentucky State Thorobreds for Country Inn & Suites Weekend at the ballpark. Two doubleheaders are on tap for Saturday and Sunday at Charger Park, in what is supposed to be a cold weekend in Huntsville.

The Chargers (6-1) will begin the weekend series against the Thorobreds (0-0) on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the second frame of doubleheaders on Sunday beginning at 12 noon.

UAH moved up four spots in the national rankings as they climbed to No. 20 after breaking the top 30 last week at No. 24.

Last weekend saw the home-opener and a three-game sweep for the Chargers. Outscoring Trevecca Nazarene 28-12 in the three-game set, the UAH bats remained red hot and will look to keep up the pace against the Thorobreds this weekend.

Kentucky State is coming to Huntsville to play its first four games of the 2013 season. They enter this season looking to improve on last year's 13-28 record. The young Thorobreds of last season did manage a third place finish in the SIAC, but with lots of experience returning this year, improvements are in order.

Six starters and most of the pitching staff return for a run in 2013, led by the pitching staff's ace, Arefes Everett. Everett led all Thorobred pitchers in innings pitched, ERA, wins, strikeouts and complete games.

One of the leading batters for Kentucky State, Bryan Berry, is another returning starter to watch out for. He held a .300-plus batting average last season and knocked in 22 runs in the process.

The Thorobreds struggled on the road last season as they only won four games compared to 19 losses, while UAH looks to improve on the perfect home record this season.
