UAH Caps Off 3-1 Weekend with 9-5 Win vs Limestone

Box Score ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Capping off a strong opening weekend, the University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team defeated Limestone 9-5 on Sunday afternoon at Drysdale Field to win their third straight.

UAH (3-1) won their final three games of the weekend after dropping their opener in extra innings. Scoring nine runs against Limestone (0-3) gave the Chargers 45 in four games, an average of 11.25 runs per game, an astonishing number. It took UAH 13 games to start last season to score 45 runs total.

After Limestone started the scoring in the second inning by plating two runners, the Chargers had an answer in the bottom half scoring three of their own. Vincent Kortbawi led off the inning with a single, and after back-to-back outs, Tyrone Smith lined a triple to right center to put UAH on the board.

Following a Houston Looser walk, last night's hero Blake Massey kept his bat hot by smacking a double to left field bringing Smith and Looser in to score the game-tying and go-ahead runs.

Limestone then tied the game and took the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth, but again UAH had the response it has had the entire the weekend.

Jud Sherril started what would be a six-run inning with a leadoff single up the middle, which was followed by a Chase Handley single to right. After Smith laid down a sacrifice bunt, Brandon Lawing brought in the first run via the sac fly, cutting the Saints lead to just one.

Massey then added his third RBI of the game by lining a single back up the box. Justin Pearson kept the rally going by crushing a double to right center and eventually coming around to score on a passed ball. After the bases were empty, Austin Sanders started another UAH rally with a base hit to center field. Chandler Brock then smashed his second home run of the season and his seventh and eight RBIs of the year to give the Chargers a 9-5 lead they would hold until the end.

Senior Dana Wright (1-0) picked up the win going seven strong innings and allowing five earned runs. Wright struck out four batters and was relieved by Codey Paulson, who picked up the save closing out the final two innings not allowing a run and surrendering just two hits.

The Chargers will look to stay hot for their home-opener at Charger Park on Friday, Feb. 8, at 5 p.m.
