HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – After inclement weather stifled a scheduled doubleheader at Carson-Newman earlier this week, the University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team travels to Memphis, Tenn., to Christian Brothers for a three-game set this weekend.
The 16th-ranked Chargers (16-3, 2-0 GSC) will look to continue their strong start in conference play after taking two from Valdosta State last weekend. The Buccaneers (4-10, 0-3 GSC) are in search of their first conference win after being swept by West Georgia in their opening three games of Gulf South Conference competition this past week.
UAH has been bolstered by the middle of their lineup as the three, four and five-hole hitters have been hitting the cover off the ball the past seven games.
The middle of the lineup has combined for a .447 batting average in their last seven contests, compiling 38 hits along the way including one home run and 10 extra-base hits. They have also knocked in 25 runs while scoring 27 of their own. If the middle of the Charger batting order is due up, big things are bound to happen.
The Buccaneers come into the weekend series having been swept in their conference opener by West Georgia. While those three were road games, Christian Brothers has won all of its games at home as they beat Kentucky Wesleyan twice and Northwestern Ohio and Loyola (La.) once.
The Chargers' bats will look to feast on Christian Brothers' pitching this weekend as the Buccaneers have been shaky on the mound this year. They currently hold a team ERA of 7.03 and allow opponent batters a cushy batting average of .317. Given that UAH averages over 10 runs a game, Christian Brothers will need to improve upon that number this weekend.
Vincent Kortbawi will look to extend his GSC-record 37-game hitting streak to a level never before reached by any baseball player in the conference. Should Kortbawi get a hit in his team's opening game on Saturday, he will stand alone atop the GSC records for longest consecutive game hitting streak.
The thre- game set between the two will take place on Saturday and Sunday with a doubleheader on Saturday slated to begin at 12:05 p.m. Sunday's game will start at 1 p.m.
