HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Hitting the stretch run of the regular season, the ninth-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team will visit West Georgia this weekend looking to gain ground in the tight GSC race.
The Chargers (29-8-1, 12-2-1 GSC) will travel to Carrollton, Ga., for a three-game series with the Wolves (20-18, 9-8 GSC) after splitting a midweek doubleheader with Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday.
“We need to come out with a better focus this weekend. Hopefully we got that one bad game out of us and we come ready to play against West Georgia,” said Royer.
UAH uncharacteristically gave up 12 runs against the Railsplitters, which was their highest total allowed this season. Equally as a rare, the team only managed one run against a Lincoln Memorial staff that was allowing over five runs per game.
With that series behind them, the Chargers will face a West Georgia ballclub that has now lost eight of their last 10 games. UWG most recently dropped two out of three against West Florida at home, before losing to Young Harris on Tuesday.
The team has however been substantially better at home in 2013 than on the road. The Wolves own a 15-6 record in their backyard compared to 5-12 record away from home.
The team is currently hitting .279, while the pitching staff boasts a 4.32 earned run average.
For UAH, the most important thing is working their way into the top six of the NCAA South Regional rankings. The first regional ranking will come out on Apr. 24, where the Chargers will find their initial fate.
According to the NCBWA, UAH is the No. 3-ranked team in the region behind Delta State and Tampa. This weekend will go a long way into securing a spot in the postseason.
“We have to take it one series at a time. We still have three very important GSC series' on the schedule and this weekend is equally as important as the rest. We have to come ready to play, because with only six teams making the regional, things are a lot harder,” said Royer.
Chandler Brock continued his hot hitting this week, pushing his average up to .431 on the season. That average is both the highest on the team and in the Gulf South Conference.
Starters
Andrew Busby,
Dana Wright and
Alex Aultman will seek to continue their strong pitching in the rotation. The three have combined to go 5-0 in their last six starts, while dominating their opponents. Busby owns just a 1.72 ERA, including three complete games and a team-high 58 strikeouts.
“The top of our rotation has been outstanding with the ability to go late into ballgames,” said Royer. “Our backend has done well also; I just hope we can keep it all together as we close out the season.”
UAH owns a 38-21 all-time advantage in the series.
