UAH Drops Two at West Georgia as Offense Struggles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CARROLLTON, Ga. – Losing their first GSC series of the season, the ninth-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team dropped the first two games of a highly-important GSC series on Saturday, 3-0 and 3-2 on the road at Cole Field.
 
UAH (29-10-1, 12-4-1 GSC) failed to win their first conference series of the season, being shut down by West Georgia (22-18, 11-8 GSC) away from Huntsville.
 
Game 1: West Georgia-3 UAH-0
Looking to keep pace with top-ranked Delta State atop the GSC, the Chargers failed to get anything going offensively against the Wolves and fell two games back in the conference race.
 
With top-ranked Delta State taking the first two games of the series over Union on Saturday, UAH fell two games back of DSU in the GSC race on Saturday and will look to salvage the series on Sunday.
 
Andrew Busby got the start on the mound, going 7.0 strong innings allowing just two earned runs and striking out six batters. The loss drops Busby back to 5-2 on the season.
 
For just the second time all year, UAH was shut out in the game, as Chase Handley was the only player to record a multi-hit game. Handley went 2 for 3, as the Chargers finished with just four hits in the game.
 
West Georgia plated one in the third and two more in the seventh on their way to the upset. UAH also committed four errors in the game, their third-highest total of the season.
 
Game 2: West Georgia-3 UAH-2
Despite outhitting the hosts 10-5, UAH failed to split day one with a 3-2 loss. The Chargers fell behind 3-0 early and did not score their first run until the sixth inning, too late by then.
 
Brandon Lawing found a hole on the left side in the sixth inning, allowing Jud Sherrill to score and cut the deficit to 3-1. Tyrone Smith added another run later in the inning when his RBI-single scored Massey.
 
UAH went quietly in the seventh, and dropped the first two games of the three-game series for the first time all year.
 
Chandler Brock's 3 for 4 day went to no avail, as Justin Pearson's 2 for 3 effort did the same.
 
Dana Wright threw 6.0 innings, being credited with the loss, striking out five West Georgia hitters in the game.
 
The Chargers will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow at noon.
