Strong Pitching Propels UAH to Two-Game Sweep of UWA

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HUNTSVILLE, AL. – Breaking a late season three-game skid, the 14th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against conference-foe West Alabama on Saturday at Charger Park, 3-2 and 4-1 thanks to dominating pitching.

Game 1: UAH-3 UWA-2

The Chargers (31-11-1, 14-4-1 GSC) pulled out a late inning rally in a pitcher's duel against the Tigers (21-23, 13-9 GSC) as they scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win 3-2 to thrilling fashion.

Much of the game saw a 1-1 tie until Cody Burton laced a triple to right center field that scored Justin Pearson for the go-ahead run. Chandler Brock would then add some insurance by hitting a single that allowed Burton to waltz in from third. The story of the game, however, was another stellar effort by the staff ace Andrew Busby.

Coming off a hard fought seven innings at West Georgia last weekend, Busby (6-2) threw a sterling complete game against West Alabama. In his nine innings of work he allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and a walk while fanning six Tiger batters. Facing only six more batters than the minimum, Busby didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning. In all, six of the nine times West Alabama came up to bat, Busby sat them down in order.

Brett Ivey (3-5) took the loss for the Tigers. Starter Taylor Bratton was on the hook for the loss, but West Alabama scored a run in the top of the ninth inning to pull within one run. They were stymied from there, however, as Busby shut down the Tigers' bats in the end.

Brock and Pearson recorded the only multi-hit games as each went 2 for 4 in the contest.

Game 2: UAH-4 UWA-1

A three-run third inning and another strong pitching performance propelled UAH to the victory in game two. Conner McCain hit a two-run single that plated Burton and Brock to break a 1-1 tie of which West Alabama had made in the top half of the third. McCain would score on an error by the catcher on a Blake Massey bunt to add one more run for insurance.

Dana Wright (4-2) got the win for the Chargers in a full seven innings of work. He allowed the only run on six hits and a walk while striking out seven. Wright kept the Tigers on their heels all evening with his strong stuff as the senior leader displayed great command of his pitches. Barry Meeks (3-4) was handed the loss for West Alabama.

On an interesting note, Chandler Brock raised his league leading batting average through the doubleheader to an astronomical .447 thanks to a 4 for 4 performance in game two. Brock also added to his team lead of RBIs to 41 and improved his slugging percentage to an unbelievable .596 clip.

UAH will host the final game of the three game set against West Alabama tomorrow at 1 p.m. It will also be the last home game of the year for the Chargers and the seven seniors will be honored.
