HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Wrapping up the 2013 regular season, the 17th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville team will visit Shorter University this weekend for its final GSC series of the season. The two teams will play a single game on Friday at 2 p.m. CT and a doubleheader on Saturday at 9 a.m. CT.
The Chargers (32-11-1, 15-4-1 GSC) will be trying to improve on their No. 3 ranking in the NCAA South Region poll that was released on Wednesday evening. The Hawks (13-31, 8-14 GSC) meanwhile are trying to finish the season on a positive note.
Shorter is currently in their first of two years of NCAA probationary period after making the move from NAIA to NCAA Division II. The school will not be eligible to compete in the postseason until 2014-15.
After dropping four out of five games UAH returned home and completed a three-game sweep of West Alabama, its first sweep of the Tigers since 2002. The team currently sits in second place in the GSC, 2.5 games behind Delta State, which means UAH will need to sweep Shorter and have Valdosta State sweep Delta State.
“Right now we're just focused on finishing the season strong and securing our spot in the postseason,” said Royer.
Taking three games will go a long way towards UAH securing a spot in the NCAA South Regional and will give the squad some much-needed momentum heading into the GSC Tournament next weekend.
With rain expected in the southeast region this weekend, the two teams decided move the game up to Friday to ensure one full game. Stay tuned for updates on potential game time changes on Saturday.
The Chargers will lock themselves into the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament with one win or one West Florida loss. With either result, UAH will head to Chattanooga, Tenn., as the No. 2 seed.
With 32 wins under its belt already, UAH will look to surpass last year's win total of 33 games. Two wins this weekend and the squad will win 30 games in back-to-back years for the first time since 2001.
