Box Score 2 ROME, Ga. - Clinching the No. 2 seed in next weekend's Taziki's Gulf South Conference Tournament, the 17th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team earned a split on Saturday afternoon at Shorter, falling 1-0 before coming away with a 2-0 win.
The Chargers (33-13-1, 16-6-1 GSC) were the benefactors of two dominating pitching performances against Shorter (15-32, 10-15 GSC) and will head to Chattanooga, Tenn., next weekend as the No. 2 overall seed in the tournament.
Game 1: Shorter-1 UAH-0
For just the third time all season the Charger bats were held scoreless.
Dana Wright gave one of his strongest outings of the year, going 7.1 innings and allowing the only run of the game.
Wright has now allowed just two earned runs in his last 14.1 innings of work. The senior fanned seven batters and scattered out eight hits.
Codey Paulson came in relief with runners at both second and third base and coaxed Shorter into a ground out and a strike out.
UAH did finish with six hits in the game, but failed to string any hits or rallies together.
Game 2: UAH-2 Shorter-0
Alex Aultman was even better in game two, as he too finished with his second straight complete game. It was the first shutout of Aultman's career at UAH, as he has allowed just two earned runs in last 16.0 innings of work.
Bailing out the struggling offense, Aultman recorded five strikeouts and surrendered just five hits. The junior made an outstanding play in the sixth inning with two runners on and nobody out to field a bunt and throw out the runner at third.
Chandler Brock launched a solo home run right away in the first inning, his fourth of the year as he has now hit safely in eight straight games. He upped his GSC-leading batting average to a .432.
The Chargers added some insurance in the seventh inning when
Cody Burton came through with an infield hit to score
Austin Sanders. Burton beat out the chopper to short and gave Aultman another run to work with.
UAH finished with just six hits again, but Aultman only needed one run in his complete game victory, dropping his ERA under three on the year.
Now preparing for the grind that is the GSC Tournament next weekend, UAH will look to better their NCAA regional hopes with a successful tournament. The team will play at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, against the No. 7 seed to be determined yet.
