Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – For the second time this season, the University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team fell to in-state rival Montevallo Wednesday night, on a rainy evening at Charger Park.
The fourth-ranked Chargers (25-7-1) loaded the bases in the ninth, but the 17th-ranked Falcons (25-12) shut the door with a game-ending double play to snap the UAH winning streak.
Conner McCain put UAH on the board right away in the first inning with a two-RBI double, giving his team an early 2-0 lead.
Jud Sherrill followed suit with a double of his own, which brought home McCain and gave the Chargers a 3-0 lead after one inning complete.
Montevallo had a quick response in the second inning, when they plated five runs. All runs that came across the plate were unearned, but the Falcons still used a double and a pair of singles to do the damage.
After five scoreless innings between the two ball clubs, Montevallo added some insurance in the eighth to push their lead up to 6-3.
The ninth inning would have some drama, but that quickly evaporated when Sherrill blooped one to first, and the Falcons scooped it up and turned a 3-6-1 double play. The Chargers still load the bases to start the inning with nobody, but mustered just one run in the come-back effort.
Chandler Brock and
Vincent Kortbawi tallied multi-hit games for UAH, while
Drew Eiland was credited with the loss despite not allowing an earned run.
The fourth-ranked Chargers will look to bounce back this coming weekend when they host Union in GSC play. The doubleheader on Saturday begins at 3 p.m. at Charger Park.
