UAH Heads North for Nonconference Tilts at LMU

LIVE STATS | LIVE AUDIO (LMU)
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. –
The 11th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team will hit the road this week, taking on Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday in a pair of seven-inning games starting at 3 p.m. eastern time.

The Chargers (28-7-1) will play just their 11th and 12th games of the season away from Charger Park, stepping outside the Gulf South Conference for a doubleheader against the Railsplitters (20-20) in Harrogate, Tenn.

After posting a recent 4-1 week, the Chargers moved up in a pair of polls while falling in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, which is the poll that UAH has been referenced to this season.

UAH swept Union over the weekend and sits atop the GSC at 12-2-1, tied with top-ranked and GSC-rival Delta State. Now seeking to continue their strong play in the region, the Chargers will look to pick up a couple of more wins in nonconference action, where they own a 16-5 record.

Only six teams will make the NCAA South Regional, as opposed to eight teams in years past. The SIAC Tournament champion, GSC Tournament champion and Sunshine State Conference regular season champion will earn automatic berths to the regional. The remaining three spots will come at-large, with a committee and regional rankings deciding who makes the postseason and who goes home.

“With only six teams making a regional this year, we have to be that much better. The GSC is a very tough conference from top to bottom this year, so it won't be easy,” said Royer.

Lincoln Memorial competes in the SAC (South Atlantic Conference), which is part of the Southeast Regional. The Railsplitters sit an even .500 on the season at 20-20 and will wrap up their regular season this coming weekend.

“We need to keep our focus this week because all of these midweek regional games count in the end. We've left some wins on the table, but have also picked up some key victories as well. It's going to be a tough stretch to end this season and move towards the conference tournament,” said Royer.

UAH continues to lead the GSC in runs scored, team batting average, triples and stolen bases. The team has seen six players earn weekly conference honors, which is more than any other school this season.

The Chargers have won three straight, while Lincoln Memorial has dropped three in a row.

UAH has dominated the all-time series leading 27-10.
