Box Score 2 ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team dropped their first two games of the 2013 season on Friday, falling to Central Oklahoma and Texas A&M Commerce at the HSU Classic.
Game 1: Central Oklahoma-3 UAH-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-7)
The 2013 season-opener for the Lady Chargers ended with a tough 3-0 loss to the Bronchos in straight sets. UAH held a 24-20 lead in the first set, but that would slip away to later fall 27-25.
Haley Snyder had six of her team-high 10 kills in the first set, providing the spark to give UAH an early lead. The native of Portage, Ind., could not be stopped throughout the majority of set, dominating from the outside and finishing with 11.5 points in the match.
Seven out of the final eight points won were awarded to UCO, with the only UAH point coming off a service error from the Bronchos.
Olivia Bauman played a strong second match as the sophomore racked up seven kills in the contest.
Ashton Baker notched 16 assists in the match as well.
"We should have closed the door in the first set, and from there we never regrouped. Our level of play dropped off from then on," said Giboney. "We saw some good things, but overall we are much too inconsistent."
Game 2: Texas A&M Commerce-3 UAH-1 (26-24, 24-26, 27-25, 25-13)
Despite improving their overall level of play in their second match of the day, the Lady Chargers lost 3-1 to the Lions after knotting the match up at 1-1 after two sets.
The first three sets were all decided by two points, with UAH coming on the winning side in the second. Much like the case in their first match of the day, the Blue and White were unable to seal the deal leading late in a set. They led 24-21, before allowing A&M to rattle off four straight.
Bauman finished with a career-high 17 kills in her second match of the day, giving her a total of 24 on the day. The native of Killen, Ala., played some of her best volleyball of her young career, but the squad was unable to grind out the close games.
Snyder tallied 11 kills, to go along with her 10 in the first game, giving her a total of 21. She also had a pair of blocks.
Kendall Knisley and
Rachel Brugman each notched seven kills in the match.
"I feel like we played much better this afternoon, but we didn't do a good job of pulling out the close sets. Our outside hitters did do a good job offensively, but we are going to need a more balanced attack," said Giboney.
The Lady Chargers will conclude their visit to Arkadelphia tomorrow, playing Cameron at 9 a.m. and Southern Arkansas 1 p.m.
