Tyler Howell, the UAH baseball team defeated West Georgia 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Cole Field in the team's conference-opener.
The Chargers move to 6-2 on the season and 1-0 in GSC play while UWG slips to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in conference.
Howell (3-0) put in 7.2 innings of work while allowing no earned runs on three hits and no walks. The left-hander has not allowed any earned runs since the fourth inning against Kentucky State on Feb. 1 and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning against the Wolves.
Luke Mould came in for relief to record his second save of the season as he would get through the 1.1 innings he pitched unscathed.
Chase Handley finished the day with a hit and an RBI while
Justin Riddle accounted for the team's second RBI.
Brandon Lawing led the team with two hits going 2-for-4 on the day.
UAH scored both of its runs in the top of the sixth. Lawing led off the inning with a single to center field before advancing to second after a
Jud Sherrill walk. Riddle then grounded out to second to score Lawing after a sacrifice bunt by
Blake Massey moved Lawing to third.
In the ensuing at bat, Handley drove in Sherrill with a single to shortstop for the team's second run.
UWG cut the lead to just one in the bottom of the seventh after JoJo Underwood scored Summer McWhorter.
The Wolves got a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth, with Casey James advancing to third after two groundouts, but Mould came in to get the Chargers through the inning forcing Shaquille Jackson to groundout to second.
Both teams return to the diamond tomorrow, ending the weekend series with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
