Eiland Helps Chargers Take Series at West Georgia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CARROLLTON, Ga. – Bolstered by a pair of strong pitching performances, the University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team split a doubleheader with West Georgia on Sunday at Cole Field, falling 2-1 before winning 5-0 in game two.

The Chargers now stand at 7-3 overall and 2-1 in GSC play, while West Georgia's record moves to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in conference action.

Game 1: West Georgia-2 UAH-1
Senior right-hander Alex Aultman was brilliant on the mound in the first game of the doubleheader, shutting down the Wolves for six-straight innings. Aultman finished  with a no decision in the game, after allowing the leadoff runner on in the seventh who would later come around to score.

With the game tied at 1-1 entering the bottom of the ninth, Jacob Croft returned to the mound after limiting the damage in the seventh. Croft struck out the first batter in the inning, before walking two-straight to put two runners with only one out.

Luke Mould would come in for relief of Croft, immediately striking out the first batter he faced. Two errors would then plague the Chargers, allowing the go-ahead run to come across the plate. Mould did what he had done all of last season and what earned him All-GSC a year ago, put his defense and team in a position to win.

UAH scored its only run in the fifth inning after Ben Hall coaxed a leadoff walk. Colton Simbeck followed with a single before a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners. Justin Riddle then recorded the only RBI of the game for the Chargers, grounding out to plate Hall.

The Chargers would go 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth and would finish with just three hits.

Game 2: UAH-5 West Georgia-0
It was the left-handed arm of Drew Eiland that stole the show in game two of the day's doubleheader, throwing a complete game shutout and allowing just four hits. Eiland helped UAH pick up a series victory to start conference play this weekend.

Eiland only needed one run and UAH brought home that run in the second inning after Chris Brown found the grass in right field and plating Blake Massey. A bases-loaded passed ball would give the Chargers a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Brown scored with Chandler Brock at the plate.

A Trey Mathis double in the fifth inning gave the visitors a 3-0 lead as Brandon Lawing would come in to score.

UAH would add two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning, before Eiland went out and secured his complete game shutout victory.

A nonconference matinee game is on tap for the Blue and White when they host Miles on Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Charger Park.
