Chandler Brock had his best offensive outing this season and the UAH baseball team recorded a split against Lee on Saturday at Charger Park. The Chargers move to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play while Lee improves to 9-4 this season and 3-2 in the GSC.
Brock headlined the Charger offense on the day, finishing 4-for-7 from the plate and his first home run of the season that came in the first outing.
Junior
Tyler Howell pitched well in his fourth start of the season, putting in 8.2 innings of work in the first stanza while striking out five batters and allowing three runs while moving to 4-0 on the year.
UAH – 4 Lee – 3UAH started the first inning with a Brock home run that cleared left field to give the Chargers the 1-0 lead.
The Flames threated in the top of the third as they would get a runner on second and third before Howell forced Derrick Pitts to fly out to center.
The next run would not come until the bottom of the sixth when the Chargers stretched the lead to 2-0.
Blake Massey led off the inning with a single to left center and then a steal before Brock Advanced Massey to third with a single.
Brandon Lawing then scored Massey in the ensuing at bat with a SAC fly.
Thanks to a
Justin Riddle single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh, UAH went up 3-0 after Riddle scored
Ben Hall all the way from second.
UAH tacked on another run to push the lead to 4-0 after
Chris Brown sent a single through the left side of the field to bring in Brock.
Things would get interesting in the top of the ninth as with one out left in the game, Jordan Stewart sent a bomb to left field for a three-run home run. However, the rally was cut short thanks to
Luke Mould's third save of the season.
UAH – 1 Lee – 3The Flames did a good job in the second game to limit the Charger offense to just one run and three hits.
Alex Aultman fell to 1-2 on the season while putting in 3.1 inning of work on the mound and allowing two earned runs on six hits.
Jacob Croft came on for 3.1 innings and allowed zero earned runs while fanning four batters at the plate.
Both lineups would struggle to get any offense going for majority of the game until the top of the fourth when Lee took a 2-0 lead, and then the Flames scored on a SAC fly in the top of the seventh to stretch the lead 3-0.
UAH finally got on the board in the final frame when
Trey Mathis sent a shot to left field for his home run of the season to cut the lead to two. 3-1.
The Chargers had a chance to tie the game after
Austin Sanders got on base with a walk and
Blake Massey reaching base off an error to put both runners on first and second.
The comeback fell short, however, as Lee forced UAH into two consecutive outs to end the game.
The Chargers and Flames return to the diamond tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the final game of the three-game series.
