Blake Massey went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the 23rd-ranked UAH baseball team to a 6-2 victory over Lee to take two out three games this weekend on Sunday afternoon at Charger Park. The Chargers improve to 10-4 overall and 4-2 in GSC play while Lee slips to 9-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Senior left-hander
Drew Eiland picked up his third win of the season to move to 3-0 on the year. Eiland put in 6.2 innings of work on the mound while striking out a season-high five batters and gave up two earned runs on seven hits.
Codey Paulson came in for the final 2.1 innings of relief to record his first save of the season, as the hard-throwing lefty struck out four batters while not allowing a hit or a run.
Sophomore outfielder
Austin Sanders finished with two RBIs and a hit, while fellow-teammate
Colton Simbeck also finished with two RBIs and hit.
The Chargers got on the scoreboard first as UAH scored four runs in the bottom of the second frame. Simbeck got the offense going with a two-RBI triple to right field to bring in
Ryan Barnes and
Brandon Lawing.
After a
Ben Hall walk, Sanders got his first RBI of the contest with a SAC fly to left field to score Simbeck. In the ensuing at bat, Massey doubled down the left field line to score
Chris Brown all the way from second.
UAH tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a Sanders double that brought in Hall, who got on base with a triple in the previous at bat. Massey then singled to right center to keep the momentum going to bring in Sanders to give the Chargers the 6-0 lead.
Lee cut the lead to four in the top of the seventh when Andres Nelo slapped a single through the left side to bring in Siosi Poti and Cameron Brewster that snapped a streak of 19.2 consecutive innings where Eiland did not give up a run.
Nelo led the Flames with two hits from the plate to go along with two RBIs.
The Chargers return to the diamond on Wednesday as they make the trip to Tuscaloosa for a 3 p.m. affair with Stillman.
