Delta State Pitching Shuts Down Chargers in Setbacks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – The offense struggled to string hits together for the 12th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville  baseball team on Saturday afternoon, falling 5-0 and 2-1 to 18th-ranked Delta State at Ferriss Field.

The Chargers drop their record to 19-9 overall and 9-5 in the GSC, while the Statesmen improve to 15-6 and 13-3 in the GSC.

Game 1: DSU-5 UAH-0
UAH mustered up just five hits and suffered its first shutout since Feb. 7 at Barry, which is also the only other time the team has not scored a run this season. The five hits were spread out over five separate innings, as DSU ace Michael Manley shut down the league's best statistical offense of the season.

Manley improved his record to a perfect 5-0 and struck out six batters in the victory. He picked up the complete-game shutout in the process, an impressive feat against a strong offensive lineup. For UAH, Tyler Howell suffered his first loss this season.

Delta State scored its first and only needed run in the second inning of the game. DSU scored another in the fourth and plated two more in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

DSU recorded 11 hits in the victory, while the Chargers saw five different players record the five hits.

Game 2: DSU-2 UAH-1
The Chargers would score their first run of the day and take a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Chandler Brock picked up an RBI with his sacrifice fly. Brock went 0-for-3 in the game, but did pick up the lone RBI of the day.

UAH would have its difficulties at the plate in game two as well, totaling just six hits in the game. As was the case in game one, six different players recorded at least one hit.

The Statesmen would tie the game in the bottom of the third, immediately following the one-run lead put forth by UAH in the top half. Delta would plate the go-ahead run in the fifth inning on a base knock to left field. Carlos Leal would tally both RBIs for the Statesmen.

Alex Aultman was the tough luck loser in game two, allowing just two earned runs and scattering nine hits. Aultman threw the entire game, but the offense was again spoiled by the DSU pitching staff.

Game three of the series will start tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
