UAH Falls 3-2 at Delta State in Walk-Off

Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – An unfortunate walk-off single by 18th-ranked Delta State in the ninth inning served the 12th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team a 3-2 defeat on Sunday afternoon at Ferriss Field.

UAH (19-10, 9-6 GSC) suffered its first sweep of the season in the defeat, after the Statesmen (16-6, 14-3 GSC) won two one-run games and also pitched a shutout  in this weekend's series.

After relief pitcher Jacob Croft recorded back-to-back outs to start the ninth inning, DSU started the game-winning two-out rally with a double. Followed by an intentional walk, the Statesmen singled through the left side to load the bases with two outs. On a 2-2 pitch, the ball was grounded between Croft and Justin Riddle between home plate and the mound, when the two players collided both looking to record the third out and force extra innings.

The Chargers struck first in the opening inning when Chandler Brock singled and later came around to score after a successful sacrifice bunt and an RBI single by Ryan Barnes. With two outs and Brock at second, Barnes lined one over the head of the DSU pitcher and into the center field grass to take an early 1-0 lead.

Brock would contribute in the second run of the game for UAH as well, when he knocked one to center to bring home Cody Burton. Burton reached on a leadoff single in the inning, then stole second and advanced to third on the throwing error.

As Drew Eiland continued to throw the way he has all season long in shutout fashion, the two teams played a 2-0 game all the way into the bottom of the sixth inning. A two-out single by DSU in that inning would cut the Chargers' lead to 2-1 and give Eiland his only earned run of the contest.

The Statesmen would tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning on another two-out base hit. Croft recorded two quick outs after the leadoff double by DSU, but another clutch hit would tie the game. Delta State would go on to win the game in the bottom of the ninth.

Eiland was credited with the no decision after going 5.2 innings and surrendering nine hits and one earned run. Brock led the way offensively going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

UAH will look to bounce back this Wednesday with a nonconference doubleheader at home against Lincoln Memorial. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Charger Park.
