Box Score 2 HUNTSVILLE | The UAH baseball team earned a sweep in the final doubleheader of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating West Alabama at Charger Park 6-5 and 10-3 improving its win streak to 12 games.
The Chargers improve to 34-13 and 21-7 in the GSC while West Alabama falls to 27-16 and 15-13 in conference play. UAH surpassed last season's win total of 33 and now owns the most wins since they won 36 games in 2004.
UAH's 30 hits is the most combined in doubleheader this season and the first time they have surpassed 10 or more hits in consecutive games.
GAME 1: UAH-6 UWA- 5Austin Sanders' walk-off single down the left field line in the ninth inning capped off a come from behind victory for the Chargers, scoring a run in the eighth and the game-winning run in the final frame to sneak by West Alabama in the day's first game.
Junior
Cody Burton paced the offense with a season-high four hits, going a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate and scoring two runs while
Chandler Brock,
Brandon Lawing and
Conner McCain all had two hits and an RBI, and McCain's single in the inning extended his hitting streak 13 games.
Luke Mould picked up the win on the mound to improve to 3-0, coming in the final inning to clinch the victory for UAH. Left-hander
Tyler Howell didn't factor into the decision while putting in seven innings of work, allowing five runs on eight hits. Codey Paulsen came in for a brief stint to allow just one hit and pick up the unofficial hold.
UAH got on the board in the bottom of the first thanks to Lawing's single to right center that drove in Burton, who got on base with a single up the middle to begin the inning and advance to third before scoring off Brock's single.
After Parker Madden's two-run shot to center gave the Tigers a 2-1 advantage in the top of the second, UAH scored a run in the bottom frame to tie the contest 2-2 after a Brock single up the middle plated Chase Handley from third.
The Chargers retook the lead in fourth once McCain sent a double down the left field line scored Burton all way from second to go ahead by one 3-2.
A run in the sixth gave the Chargers their biggest lead of the day with the 4-2 lead when
Blake Massey took advantage of a throwing error.
UWA captured the lead for the final time before UAH's comeback, tallying three runs off a three-run jack down the left field line courtesy of Tanner Rainey.
GAME 2: UAH-10 UWA-3A pair of four-run innings in game two of the day allowed UAH to cruise to a convincing 10-3 win and secure its fifth-straight GSC series victory. The Chargers finished with 13 hits in the game, this after the team smacked 17 in the first game.
A stretch of five hits in six at bats was the story of the bottom of the second inning, as UAH would grab the lead back at 4-3 after plating four in that inning. West Alabama scored three runs in the top half of the inning, thanks to a pair of errors by UAH.
Ben Hall picked up the first RBI of the day, which was then followed by a two-RBI double by
Justin Riddle.
Chase Handley gave the team its third-straight hit with an RBI single, which gave the Chargers a lead they would not relinquish.
Riddle and Handley would have a say in the four-run fifth inning as well, as the two combined for three RBIs, while
Chandler Brock gave the team another.
Alex Aultman (7-4) settled in nicely after allowing three runs in the second to throw five consecutive shutout innings. Aultman struck out four batters, while only one of his runs allowed was earned.
Four players recorded a multi-hit game, as Riddle, Handley, Hall and Brock each picked up a pair of hits with Handley notching three. All but one player in the UAH lineup recorded a hit.
The 10 runs scored marks the 12th time this season UAH has scored in double figures.
The Chargers go for the sweep and their 13th-straight win tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Sunday will also be Senior Day at Charger Park, as nine UAH seniors will be honored at approximately 12:40 p.m. before the game.
