Chargers Win Fourth Straight, Top Montevallo 9-4

Box Score HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team came away with its fourth-straight win Wednesday evening, defeating in-state rival Montevallo 9-4 at Charger Park. The Chargers improve to 26-13 while Montevallo falls to 23-17.

Senior right-hander Codey Paulson (3-0) registered the victory on the mound while going three innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits as all three wins have come in mid-week affairs.

The trio of Mitchell Wright, Jacob Croft and Luke Mould came in to pitch the final six innings of relief and did an excellent job of shutting the Falcon offense down, allowing just one run on six hits.

Brandon Lawing led the offense with three RBI and a hit, while Colton Simbeck recorded a game-high three hits. Since being inserted into the starting lineup against Trevecca Nazarene on April 2nd, Simbeck is batting .500 (9-18) with nine RBI in five games.

UAH struck early in the first when Lawing sent a double down the left-field line to score Chandler Brock and Cody Burton after Burton led off the inning with a single and Brock was on base thanks to a fielding error. The Chargers took the 3-0 lead once Blake Massey's groundout to shortstop was just enough to drive in Lawing.

Montevallo took advantage of a UAH fielding error and cut the lead to one, 3-2, in the top of the second before the Chargers stretched the lead back to three, 5-2, in the bottom frame as Justin Riddle would come home via a walk by Lawing and Burton hustled home on a wild pitch in the ensuing at bat.

The Falcons scored once again in the third and in the sixth to pull within two, 6-4, but the Chargers tacked on three runs in the seventh with a Ben Hall RBI-single, a wild pitch and a nifty sacrifice bunt from Chase Handley that drove in Simbeck from third.

UAH will look to keep the strong play going with a three-game series this weekend at Charger Park against GSC foe Christian Brothers. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. for Saturday's doubleheader and will be followed by a fireworks display at Charger Park.
