HUNTSVILLE | Looking to make some noise and improve its NCAA Tournament resume, the UAH baseball team will open up the GSC Tournament this Friday as the No. 2 seed facing No. 7-seed North Alabama in Birmingham at Young Memorial Field on the campus of UAB.
The Chargers, holding a record of 34-13 this season, have won 12-straight games and when they take the field on Friday it will have been exactly one month since their last defeat. During this impressive stretch, UAH has swept the likes of Valdosta State, Christian Brothers and Union, while also taking the first two games against West Alabama before having game three rained out.
An early exit in last year's tournament in Chattanooga would eliminate the team's chances at back-to-back Regionals, but unlike last season, the Chargers have hit their stride late in the season instead of early on.
UAH, owning the No. 2 seed, will take on rival and No. 7 seed North Alabama in its first game of the tournament on Friday at 1 p.m. The two teams met earlier this season in Huntsville with UAH taking two out of the three games. The winner will play the winner of No. 3 West Florida and No. 6 West Georgia at 1 p.m. on Saturday, while the loser will play the loser of that game at 10 a.m.
The Blue and White will be making its 13 appearance in the GSC Tournament, while owning a record of 17-24 in those tournaments. UAH won its lone title in 2001, but has made four appearances the championship game.
Delta State, who owns the No. 1 seed in the tournament, is the only team in the GSC this season to take a series from the Chargers. DSU swept UAH in Cleveland, Miss., earlier this season, but since that sweep the team has gone 15-3.
Friday's matchup against the Lions will be the 55th all-time meeting between the two schools, with UAH holding a 29-26 advantage. North Alabama is coming off a three-game sweep of Shorter and went an even 25-25 this season including a 14-16 record in the GSC.
