TAMPA | An 11-run explosion by the 20th-ranked UAH baseball team on Friday night moved its record to 2-0 at the NCAA South Regional, routing 24th-ranked Florida Southern 11-1 at the UT Baseball Field. The Chargers will now move on to face the No. 1 team in the country and the top seed in the Region, the University of Tampa on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. ET.
Â
UAH (41-14) jumped all over the Mocs (33-18) early and often in its second game of the Regional, scoring its highest NCAA Regional run total since 2001 when they scored 14 against Central Oklahoma. The Chargers scored four runs in the first inning, two runs in the third and three in the seventh, while adding one in each the fourth and eighth innings.
Â
The Chargers' six through eight hitters combined to go 9-for-11 in the game, nothing four RBIs and five runs scored.
Brandon Lawing went 2-for-2 with three walks,
Ben Hall went 3-for-5, while the senior catcher
Justin Riddle went a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish.
Â
Every player in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit, while four players had at least two hits or more.
Chandler Brock,
Austin Sanders, Riddle and
Chase Handley each chipped in with a pair of RBIs.
Â
Lost in the offensive showcase UAH had on display was the strong outing by senior right-hander
Alex Aultman. Aultman went 8.0 strong innings and ran his scoreless innings streak to 22 straight after keeping Florida Southern off the board for the first four innings of the game. He allowed just the one earned run and struck out six batters.
Â
Edwin Reyes came in to seal the deal for UAH, throwing the final inning and not allowing a run.
Â
UAH has now won 19 of its last 20 games, including six straight games overall and four-straight against nationally ranked opponents.
Â
The Chargers will now take on the No. 1 seed at the Regional and top-ranked team in Division II, the Tampa Spartans. That game will start at 11 a.m. ET. Should the Chargers win, they will play Sunday at 12 noon, if they lose they will play tomorrow at 7 p.m. ET.
