UAH Eliminated from Regional, Ends Terrific Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TAMPA, Fla. | Concluding one of the most memorable seasons in program history, the University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team was eliminated from the 2014 NCAA South Regional on Saturday night, falling 7-2 to Florida Southern after losing 9-5 to top-ranked Tampa earlier in the day.  The Chargers finish the season with a record of 41-16, two wins shy of the program-record of 43 set in 1999.

The team finishes the season with an impressive record of 41-16, which included a 13-game winning streak, a GSC Championship and four-straight wins against top-10 ranked opponents.

UAH couldn't find any offense in the nightcap matchup with Florida Southern (35-18), scoring just two runs a day after rolling 11-1 against the same team. Earlier in the day, the Chargers entered the ninth inning tied with No. 1 Tampa (50-2) before the Spartans  plated four runs in the final inning to escape with the win.

Florida Southern got out to a 5-1 lead from which UAH could not quite recover. Ben Hall hit the lone home run of the Regional for UAH in the seventh inning but that was all the Blue and White could score. Seven different players recorded a hit with Hall and Blake Massey notching the RBIs.

Codey Paulson went 4.0 innings allowing four earned runs and Drew Eiland came in to throw the final 5.0 innings allowing a pair of earned runs.

In the team's first game of the day, UAH responded with three runs in the first inning after Tampa scored two in the opening frame. All three runs by the Chargers were scored with two outs, which was sparked by Massey's eight-pitch walk. Four consecutive batters reached base safely to follow, highlighted by Austin Sanders' RBI-single and Ben Hall's two-RBI single.

UAH added its fourth run of the game in the third inning when Brandon Lawing connected on a sacrifice fly that scored McCain. Chase Handley tied the game at 5-5 with an RBI-single up the middle in the eighth as it would prove to be the final run of the game.

The program will say goodbye to 10 seniors, all of whom gave strong contributions to a conference championship and displayed immense dedication over their time in Huntsville. Five of those seniors served as regular starters, which included shortstop Blake Massey, third basemen Chase Handley, right fielder Conner McCain, catcher Justin Riddle and pitchers Drew Eiland and Alex Aultman.

A number of key starters will return to UAH next season as Ben Hall, Brandon Lawing, Chandler Brock, Cody Burton, Austin Sanders, Luke Mould and Tyler Howell will all be in the lineup in 2015.
