Chargers Split Matches in UAH Classic Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team split its two matches on Saturday afternoon at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall with a win over Trevecca Nazarene and a loss to Southwest Baptist.
 
The Chargers (2-2) started out the day with a four-set loss to the Southwest Baptist Bearcats (25-27, 21-25, 27-25, 18-25).
 
SBU maintained a lead through most of the first set, until a pair of four-point runs by UAH evened the score. With the Chargers trailing 11-6, Rachel Brugman notched one of her three kills during the match to start the four point rally. Kendall Knisley followed suit with a kill in the following sequence and the Bearcats committed an attack error to bring the score to 11-9.
 
Later on with SBU leading 17-13, UAH notched four consecutive points highlighted by back-to-back block assists by Ashton Baker and Rachel Brugman. The Bearcats went on to win on a kill by Taryn Marton and an attack error by Anna Claire Johnson. Haley Snyder led the squad with five kills in the first frame, while Kirsten Giles totaled a team-high 21 assists.
 
The second set was equally as competitive with the frame tied for the majority of the contest. UAH took a late lead on a three point rally thanks in large part to two kills by Johnson. However, SBU countered with a six-point run to finish off the set two win.
 
The Chargers rebounded in the third set to take a needed victory which included a late four-point and three-point run. Snyder notched a crucial kill with the Chargers trailing 25-24, which was followed by two ball handling errors by the Bearcats to give UAH a 27-25 victory.
 
UAH started strong in the fourth and final set against Southwest Baptist, jumping out to an early 8-3 lead. SBU fought back late in the contest by taking a four point lead over six sequences. The Bearcats finished off the match victory with six consecutive scores.
 
The Chargers played another tightly contended match against Trevecca Nazarene but ended this contest on the winning end in four sets (26-24, 25-22, 19-25, 25-22). The Chargers trailed for the majority of the first set until the squad went on a four-point run to cut the Trojans lead to three. Kendall Knisely and Snyder notched key kills during the rally.
 
With the first set tied at 23-23, UAH rallied for four points in the final five sequences to take the first win of the match.  Olivia Bauman highlighted the win with two kills in the final sequence, along with five kills
 
UAH continued their winning ways in the second set which included an early six-point rally to tie the game at 8-8. Snyder totaled two kills during the second set win. UAH pulled away late with a four-point rally that consisted of two errors by TNU, a service ace by Baker and a kill by Snyder to complete the 25-22 win.
 
The Chargers took a step back in the third set thanks to Trevecca Nazarene completing four rallies of three points or more during the frame. The Chargers tried to battle back late with a three-point rally to cut the Trojans lead to three, but TNU went on to score three straight times to take a 25-19 victory.
 
Early in the fourth set the Chargers were trailing by 8-3, before Johnson notched a kill to start a streak of seven consecutive points which put UAH in the lead 10-8. The Chargers maintained the lead until TNU knotted the score at 17-17. However, UAH did not stutter and totaled two, three-point rallies to go ahead 23-19. Snyder finished off the match victory for the Chargers with her 25th kill of the day.
 
The Chargers have three home games in the coming week beginning on Tuesday against Union at 7 p.m. UAH will also play West Florida on Friday at 6 p.m., and West Georgia on Saturday at 2 p.m. All games will be played at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall.
