Saturday, Feb. 14 (DH) | 1 p.m. | LIVE STATSMIDWEEK ACTION: The Chargers offense continued to excel at the outset of the season, as the Blue and White won in convincing fashion at Tuskegee on Tuesday by a score of 11-1. UAH totaled eight base hits led by
Cody Burton who went 3-for-3 and reached base in each plate appearance, while
Chandler Brock and
Colton Simbeck shared the team-high with three RBI. UAH is 4-0 on the new season.
BEST IN SHOW: Sophomore
Trey Mathis garnered GSC Player of the Week honors after a stellar opening to the 2015 season, batting .727 (8-for-11) with two doubles, two homers, six runs and six RBI against Maryville. In all, Mathis totaled 16 bases while slugging 1.455 and reaching base at a .692 clip last weekend. Mathis added one RBI and one walk in the win at Tuskegee, and he is currently sixth in the conference in batting average (.571) and second in slugging percentage (1.143).
ROTATION: The UAH pitching staff – highlighted by weekend starters
Daniel Koger,
Chris Kilpatrick and
Tyler Howell – ranks second in the conference with a 2.38 ERA. Last weekend, the Chargers starting arms combined for 16.0 innings pitched with four earned runs, six walks, and 15 strikeouts. Koger, a southpaw, paced the trio with 6.0 innings on one run while fanning seven.
FLEXING: The Chargers have combined for 19 extra-base hits in four games this season and currently lead the GSC with six home runs and are second with a team slugging percentage of .618. Individually, UAH is led by Mathis and Simbeck with two homers apiece, followed by
AJ Walden and
Zach Dugas with one each. Four different Chargers have registered two doubles so far this season as well.
ROAD AHEAD: The Blue and White will head out for an eight-game road swing following the GSC opening series at Charger Park. The trip begins at Miles on Wednesday, before the squad heads to Cleveland, Tennessee to take on Lee in a three game set on Feb. 21-22. The tail end of the trip features visits to Stillman (Feb. 25) and Mississippi College (Feb. 28-March 1).
MATCHUP HISTORY: UAH holds an all-time series record of 42-26 against West Georgia, following a series win in the GSC opener last season (Feb. 15-16) in Carrollton, Georgia. The two squads are 3-3 over the past two seasons.
WOLVES RECENT ACTION: West Georgia has won three of the past four games, including a midweek matchup at Stillman by 11-4 and a series win over Montevallo last weekend. The Wolves enter the weekend 6-1 overall and will be opening GSC play as well.
UWG PROFILE: Heading into the weekend, West Georgia is batting .316 as a team, led by Tyler Hutch who is at .500 (9-for-18) through seven games. Garret Hayes and Dalton Rogers have driven in the most runs at 11 and 10 respectively. On the mound, the Wolves have totaled a 2.51 ERA over 61.0 innings pitched, headlined by starters Matthew Norton (0.00 ERA, 10.1 IP) and Jamie Sexton (0.69 ERA, 13.0 IP).
