RECENT ACTION: The Chargers opened up Gulf South Conference play with a three-game sweep of visiting Lee this past weekend at Charger Park, winning by scores of 7-2, 2-1 and 10-9. UAH is one of two teams to start league play 3-0 as Valdosta State swept Christian Brothers to open its GSC slate.
REGION UPDATE: UAH has moved back into the NCBWA South Region rankings with a rating of No. 8 after being unranked in the previous week's top 10. Tampa paces the region with nine first-place votes, followed by Florida Southern in second and Valdosta State in third.
IMPACTFUL BAT:
Trey Mathis has been the Chargers most consistent hitter through the first three weeks of the season, including this past week in which the junior batted .357 (5-for-14) with nine RBI, four runs scored, three homers, one double and one walk. Overall in 2016, Mathis leads all UAH regulars with a .462 batting average, 15 RBI and a .795 slugging percentage, which all rank in the top 10 in the GSC.
ROOKIE IMPRESSING: Freshman
Taylor Clemons has been a stellar performer out of the bullpen this season as the lefty has not allowed an earned run in 12.1 innings of work. This past week, Clemons tossed 6.0 innings with eight strikeouts, three hits allowed and zero walks.
ON THE BUMP: UAH received a pair of strong starting performances by
Wilson Adams and
Will Myers in the doubleheader sweep of Lee on Saturday, with the duo combining for 12.1 innings pitched, seven hits, 15 strikeouts and three earned runs. Adams sits at 2-1 on the year with a 2.21 ERA over a team-high 20.1 innings, while Myers has a 2.93 ERA over 15.1 frames with a 3-0 record.
OFFENSE IN 2016: The Chargers rate third in the GSC with a team-batting average of .329, as a total of six players are hitting above .300. UAH also ranks in the top five as a team in the league in runs (99), hits (119), RBI (86), total bases (168) and walks (52).
GOLDEN BEARS PROFILE: Miles enters the week with a 6-5 record in 2016 after most recently splitting a doubleheader with Morehouse this past Saturday. The Golden Bairs offense is led by Xavius Burden with a .438 batting average, while the pitching staff owns a collective 6.36 ERA.
WOLVES PROFILE: West Georgia opened the GSC schedule with a series loss at North Alabama to give the team an 8-2 overall record, despite winning the opening game of the set 13-1. UWG boasts a total of six batters hitting above .300, with the pitching staff holding a 1.80 team ERA through 10 games played.
