HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team begins play at the 2016 Gulf South Conference tournament on Saturday morning in Pensacola, Florida at Jim Spooner Field as the fifth-seeded Chargers take on second-seeded Delta State at 11 a.m. in the opening matchup of the tournament.

The Chargers enter the weekend with a 31-18 overall record, while the nationally-ranked Statesmen are 34-15 after the regular season.

UAH earned its ninth consecutive and 15th overall berth to the GSC tournament following a 21-12 record in league play, which is the third straight time the Chargers have totaled 20 wins or more in GSC games. The Blue and White are 25-25 when playing in the GSC tournament and hold a 7-8 record against DSU in league tournament contests.

Earlier this week, the Chargers had a total of five players awarded by the GSC for their performance during the 2016 campaign, including First Team All-GSC honorees Wilson Adams and Austin Sanders to go along with Second Team selections Taylor Clemons, Matt Spruill and AJ Walden.

Adams, a right-hander, has been the ace of the UAH pitching staff and has turned in one of the strongest performances in the nation, as the senior leads the GSC and is in the top 30 in the NCAA with a 2.08 ERA, 90.2 innings pitched and 97 strikeouts. He also owns a career 2.64 ERA, which is atop the UAH career leaderboard for pitchers with at least 100 innings.

Offensively in 2016, Walden has paced UAH with a .380 average, 13 home runs, 50 RBI and a .693 slugging percentage, while ranking in the top five in the league in GSC games in batting average (.411), homers (10), RBI (34) and slugging percentage (.750).

Clemons – who was also honored as GSC Freshman of the Year in 2016 – enjoyed an outstanding first season with the UAH baseball program, as the Huntsville native is second in the GSC with eight saves and has a bullpen-low 1.45 ERA over 31.0 innings pitched with 32 strikeouts compared to seven walks.

Delta State begins the GSC tournament as the second seed in the field of six teams, after recording a 23-10 record in league games in 2016.

The Statesmen have had a dominant offense this season with the squad leading the GSC in batting average (.351), doubles (115), RBI (361), slugging percentage (.532), and on-base percentage (.432). Will Robertson has been Delta State's leader offensively with a .457 average, 48 runs, eight homers and 69 RBI.

The Delta State pitching staff boasts an ERA of 3.78 so far in 2016, with 2016 GSC Pitcher of the Year Tre Hobbs leading the way with a 12-1 record, 2.85 ERA, 85.1 innings pitched and eight complete games.

The winner of Saturday's game will play the loser of the West Georgia (No. 4 seed)/West Alabama (No. 3 seed), while the loser will move on to an elimination game against the loser of Lee (No. 6 seed)/West Florida (No. 1 seed).
