THE JOURNEY STARTS: The UAH men's basketball team will start the 2017-18 campaign this weekend in the Sunshine State, taking on Saint Leo and Tampa in a pair of games on the UT campus. Saturday's contest against SLU is slated for an 11 a.m. CST start, while UAH battles the Spartans at 1 p.m. CST on Sunday. Both contests can be heard in the Tennessee Valley on 97.7 The Zone.
Â
LAST TIME OUT: The Chargers gave No. 25 Alabama all it could handle on Monday with the Crimson Tide winning 74-65 in a game that saw Justin Ward lead all scorers with 29 points including a stretch of 16 straight to open the contest. On the night, UAH shot 40.0 percent from the field including a 34.5 percent mark from 3-point land.
Â
THE WAIT IS OVER: While Ward has been a key part of UAH's success over his three previous years in the Blue and White and is in fact the team's leading returning scorer after averaging 9.1 points per game last year, the senior will be counted upon in a starting role this year. In the past three seasons, Ward has logged two starts: one during his freshman campaign and another last year.
Â
STRONG DEBUT: Sam Orf dazzled in the exhibition at Alabama as the true freshman went 5-for-8 to score in double figures with 10 points while also handing out three assists and grabbing three rebounds. The St. Charles, Missouri, native led all UAH reserves in minutes as he played 24 off the bench against the Crimson Tide.
Â
ABOUT SAINT LEO: The Lions are 1-2 on the year after playing three games at the Disney Division II Tipoff in California, knocking off Humboldt State 66-65 while falling 62-53 to Point Loma Nazarene and 83-69 to Concordia. Isaiah Hill and Tyreece Brice are leading the team offensively on the young season with both scoring 13.0 points per contest.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: UAH picked up an 82-80 win over Saint Leo last year to take a 3-1 lead all-time against the Lions. In that contest last year in Florence, Kip Owens and Ward were two of five Chargers to score in double figures as they scored 16 and 13, respectively.
Â
ABOUT TAMPA: The Spartans were picked to finish third in the Sunshine State Conference preseason poll of the league's head coaches, and they will host North Alabama on Saturday before taking on UAH on Sunday. UT also played an SEC school in an exhibition, falling 94-57 to Florida, and forward Duke Shelton led the Spartans with 22 points and 11 rebounds in the contest.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: The Chargers own a slight 3-2 advantage in the all-time series after picking up a 91-86 victory last year at UNA, and UAH has won three straight over Tampa.
