LOOKING BACK AT 2016: The Chargers finished the 2016 campaign as the runner-up in the Gulf South Conference tournament last spring, after accruing a 33-20 overall record and a 21-12 mark in conference play. This season, UAH returns four regulars from last year's lineup, two starters from the weekend rotation and two key members of the bullpen.

PRESEASON RECOGNITION: UAH came in at fifth in the GSC preseason coaches' poll ahead of the 2017 season, with West Florida leading the way with a total of six first-place votes. The Chargers had a pair named to the 2017 Preseason All-GSC squad in
Taylor Clemons and
AJ Walden, while both Walden and senior
Trey Mathis were recognized as members of the Preseason National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-South Region squad.

ON THE HILL: Will Meyers – the Chargers leading returner from the weekend rotation a year ago – enters the season after an impressive junior campaign in which the southpaw recorded an 8-5 record with a 3.94 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 75.1 innings pitched. Meyers is joined in the rotation by returners
Heath McRae (5.60 ERA, 72.1 IP) and
Riley Camp (3.86 ERA, 28.0 IP) in the weekend rotation to start the season.

IN THE OUTFIELD: Two major components from the outfield in the 2016 season in
Ben Rhodes and
Wright Hackett return for their junior and senior seasons, respectively, with both players starting in 45 games or more. Rhodes registered a .333 batting average with four homers and 27 RBI, while Hackett batted .313 with nine doubles and 29 RBI in addition to manning centerfield in all 53 of the Chargers games.

FIGHTING KNIGHTS PROFILE: Lynn will open its season against UAH on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader, after posting a 29-23 overall record in 2016 and reaching the NCAA South Regional this past spring. The Fighting Knights leading returner is Frank Grandinette who started 12 games for a 4.98 batting average while also turning in a .299 average with four homers and 21 RBI. UAH is 3-4 all-time against Lynn.

SHARKS PROFILE: This is will be the second year in a row the Chargers face Nova Southeastern at the outset of the season, with the Sharks coming off an NCAA Championship performance in the 2016 campaign. The Sharks – who enter the year as the No. 1 team nationally – are led by NCBWA First Team All-American Brandon Gomez who notched 21 homers and 75 RBI last season. The Chargers hold an all-time record of 2-3 against the Sharks.

SAILFISH PROFILE: Sunday's matchup will be the first-ever meetings between UAH and Palm Beach Atlantic, as the Sailfish come off a 2016 season with a record of 21-28. Kyle Simon is the leading returner for PBA after totaliong nine homers, 43 RBI and a .301 batting average in the 2016 campaign.

LOOKING AHEAD: Following this weekend, the Chargers look ahead to the home-opening series against Spring Hill next Saturday and Sunday at Charger Park. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. on next Saturday, while next Sunday is scheduled to commence at 1 p.m.
