STARTING 2017 ON THE ROAD: The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team is set to begin the new season with a pair of contests against preseason national-ranked opponents in the Sunshine State, traveling to No. 14 Palm Beach Atlantic for a 6 p.m. CDT contest on Friday and then venturing to No. 10 Lynn at 5 p.m. CDT on Sunday.
Â
GLAD TO SEE YOU AGAIN: Friday's contest will mark the return to action for preseason all-GSC selection
Jordan Wright who missed all of last season due to injury. In 2015, Wright was an offensive force for the Chargers, scoring 13 times and adding six assists to total 32 points. That placed him among the nation's leaders in points per game (14th), goals per game (15th), total goals (24th), and total points (27th).
Â
RETURNING FACES: In addition to the return of Wright, the Chargers bring back seven starters from a year ago, including four of the top five players in minutes in
Daniel Hearle,
Guy Clennett,
Gunnar Birgisson, and
Corentin Diverres. Also back are five of the team's top seven scorers, as are goalkeepers
Myles Fullen and
Gabriel Chilas.
Â
ABOUT PALM BEACH ATLANTIC: The 14th-ranked Sailfish have been picked to finish second in the always-tough Sunshine State Conference after winning the league's regular season last year en route to an NCAA tournament appearance. Charlie Dennis led PBA in scoring last season with nine goals and six assists and his back for his senior campaign.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: The lone meeting between the two programs came a season ago when the Sailfish were 2-1 winners in Huntsville thanks to a successful PK just over three minutes into the second half that proved to be the difference.
Â
ABOUT LYYN: The Fighting Knights are the preseason favorites in the SSC after splitting the regular season title with PBA last year while also winning the SSC tournament and advancing to the national postseason. A pair of All-Americans in Jack Watson and Niklas Tasky return for Lynn as do three other all-South Region choices.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: UAH is 0-6-0 all-time against the Fighting Knights, including a heartbreaking 2-1 setback in double overtime last year in the Rocket City. Lynn scored just before the half in that contest, and the 1-0 score remained until
Khalil Bell leveled the affair in the 81st minute to send the game to extra time in which LU won it in the 103rd minute.
