A RETURN TO ACTION: After being off last week, the UAH men's soccer team returns to the pitch this week, welcoming non-conference foe Carson-Newman at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Charger Park before traveling to Montevallo for a 7:30 p.m. contest on Friday and to Auburn Montgomery for a 3:30 p.m. showdown on Sunday. The Chargers enter play this week at 3-3-0 (2-0-0 Gulf South Conference).
Â
WELCOME (BACK): This weekend's games against the in-state foes represent the first since Montevallo returned to the GSC and since AUM began its transition to Division II and the conference. The Falcons are immediately eligible for postseason play, while the Warhawks count in the conference standings but are not eligible for postseason play.
Â
RECAPPING THE LAST TIME OUT: UAH began conference play on Sept. 15 and 17, picking up a weekend sweep at home by defeating Spring Hill by a 3-1 score and knocking off West Florida 1-0.
Â
AROUND THE GSC: The Chargers are one of four teams that are undefeated in league play with Mississippi College leading the conference with 12 points on a 4-0-0 record, while Christian Brothers is in second at 3-0-0. UAH is then in a four-way tie for third with Lee, Spring Hill, and Shorter who are all 2-2, while Montevallo is the other unbeaten in GSC action at 1-0-0.
Â
IMPROVING IN THE BACK: After giving up seven goals in the first two games of the year – albeit to two of the top-ranked teams in the country – the Chargers have tightened things up defensively, only allowing five scores in the next five games including the team's first shutout of the season against West Florida. In that perfect to conference play, goalkeeper
Myles Fullen made five stops including a season-best four in the victory over Spring Hill.
Â
YOUTH MOVEMENT: The Chargers have heavily leaned on their younger players through the first six games in addition to taking advantage of the team's significantly improved depth. UAH has had 17 different starters on the year, and of those 17, six have been freshmen while four others have been sophomores.
Â
ABOUT CARSON-NEWMAN: The Eagles travel to the Rocket City with a 5-1-1 record on the season, and the team is unbeaten in its previous five contests. Tom Read leads the team offensively with four goals and an assist for nine points, while Twan Verweij is 4-1-1 with a 0.35 goals against average in net for C-N.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: The Chargers have a 4-3-0 advantage in the all-time series, though the Eagles won the most recent meeting with a 3-1 victory in the Volunteer State in 2015. When the teams last met in Huntsville, UAH was a 5-1 winner back in 2014.
Â
ABOUT MONTEVALLO: Winners of three straight, the Falcons head into the week at 4-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in GSC play. Cesare Marconi has three goals and two assists to total eight points and lead UM offensively, while Robert Kuta has posted a 0.67 goals against average in playing each minute in goal for the Falcons.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: Montevallo hold a 14-11-1 edge in the all-time series between the two programs, and when the two teams met last season, the Falcons were a 2-1 winner in double overtime.
Tucker Watts scored the goal for UAH with an equalizer in the 59th minute.
Â
ABOUT AUBURN MONTGOMERY: The Warhawks head into play this week at 0-7-0 and will play both Clayton State and West Alabama before hosting UAH on Sunday. Alexis Arriaga has tallied the lone goal on the year for AUM.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: The Chargers are 5-4-0 all-time against AUM including a 2-0 win on the road last season that saw UAH score twice in the final 10 minutes to secure the victory.
