HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team is set to open up play in the 2021 Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Championship on Tuesday, as the West Division's top seed will host the East Division's No. 4 seed Montevallo. Tip-off at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall is slated for 7:03 p.m.
Â
Limited tickets remain for the contest as capacity remains reduced due to the pandemic.
UAH has hosted a home game on Super Tuesday in each of the six tournament appearances the Chargers have recorded since the GSC went to campus sites for the first round in 2015.
Â
The Chargers earned the West Division's No. 1 spot in the tournament this season after posting an impressive 12-1 mark in conference play – the best record in either division.Â
Â
UAH is led on the season offensively by a trio of seniors, with
Sam Orf pacing the team with 17.5 points per game thanks to a 51.4 percent overall shooting mark.
JJ Kaplan – who returned in January from an injury that delayed the start of his season – is averaging 14.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game while shooting nearly 59 percent, and
Seth Swalve is scoring 12.4 points per contest while handing out a team-high 37 assists.
Â
Montevallo went 8-7 in GSC play this season to finish fourth in the west. Interestingly, the Falcons were just 3-6 at home but feature a 5-2 road record, and the team has five that are averaging double figures led by Xavier Malcom who is scoring 14.4 points per contest.
Â
UAH and Montevallo have met 76 times prior to Tuesday's contest, but this will mark the first meeting between the two programs in the GSC tournament. The Chargers have held the upper hand in the series of late, going 5-1 including five straight wins since the Falcons rejoined the GSC.
Â
The Chargers will be looking to defend their title as UAH won its fourth GSC tournament a year ago just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down the rest of the postseason.Â
Â
UAH is 22-14 all-time in the conference tournament.
Â
Tuesday's game will be streamed live on FloHoops. More information on this subscription service that is the new home of all GSC championship events can be found at
