UAH Begins GSC Tournament Play Friday Night

5/6/2021 10:51:00 AM

OXFORD, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team opens play at the 2021 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championships as the sixth seed against third-seeded Shorter on Friday night at Choccolocco Park. First pitch is slated for 30 minutes following the 4 p.m. contest.

This will be the UAH baseball program's 19th all-time appearance in the GSC tournament, as the Chargers hold an all-time record of 30-30 in GSC tournament games. The program has made seven appearances in the GSC Championship game in program history, with UAH winning the title in 2001 and, most recently, in 2014.

UAH and Shorter are matching up for the first time in the GSC postseason, which will be the 25th all-time meeting between the two programs. The Chargers currently own a 17-7 all-time record against the Hawks, as UAH took two-of-three from SU in a GSC series this season on April 16-17 in Huntsville.

Overall in 2021, UAH boasts a 19-16 overall record and a 16-14 mark in GSC play with the Chargers notching a total of seven conference series victories in head coach Hunter Royer's 12th season at the helm of the program.

The Chargers offense featured five regulars batting above .300, led by First Team All-GSC honoree Garrett Bodine with a .373 batting average. Bodine has been the squad's strongest all-around performer with eight doubles, five triples, two homers, 20 RBI, 27 walks and 12 steals.

Colin Brewer was also named an All-GSC performer for the Chargers with a Second Team selection, as he leads the squad with 25 RBI and 11 doubles while batting .347 as the team's primary catcher.

Kody Keiser has become one of the leaders of the UAH starting staff down the stretch in the regular season, as he boasts a rotation-low 3.78 ERA and .97 WHIP over 47.2 innings pitched. In his last three starts, Keiser has worked 25.2 innings with two earned runs allowed.

The Chargers bullpen is led by Parker Henson (2.70 ERA/13.1 IP) and Heath Senn (2.95 ERA/21.1 IP) who have both picked up two saves and one win out of the bullpen in 2021.

The winner of the UAH and Shorter matchup will move on to play the winner of West Florida and West Georgia on Saturday at 4 p.m. The loser between UAH and Shorter will matchup with the loser of UWF and UWG on Saturday 30 minutes following the conclusion of the 4 p.m. game.
