UAH Stays Alive at GSC Tournament with Victory, Advances to Play DSU Monday

Box Score OXFORD, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team has advanced to play Delta State on Monday at the 2021 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championship with a 9-5 win over No. 24 Shorter on Sunday afternoon at Choccolocco Park. UAH improves to 21-17, while SU dips to 27-15.
 
Due to inclement weather, UAH and Delta State's GSC tournament semifinals matchup has been postponed to Monday at 5 p.m.
 
Parker Warren started on the mound for the Chargers, and he turned in 2.1 innings with two runs allowed, zero walks and three strikeouts.
 
Parker Henson had a strong long relief outing after Warren's exit, as he posted 6.2 innings with three unearned runs allowed and four strikeouts. Henson picked up the win to improve to 3-0 in 2021.
 
UAH's offense was led Garrett Bodine with a team-high three RBI and two runs scored, as he delivered a game-tying, three-run home run in the top of the seventh.
 
Three Chargers had multi-hit performances, including John Trousdale, Landon Ezzell, and Zach Duvall with two apiece. Ezzell additionally was second on the squad with two RBI.
 
Griffin Rivers and Carson Villalta each had extra-base hits, with Rivers posting a triple and Villalta notching a solo home run.
 
Shorter scored in each of the initial three innings on Sunday with one run apiece in the first and second, before a three-run home run by Nate Butterworth in the third inning made it a 5-0 Hawks advantage.
 
The Chargers went on the board in the top of the fourth RBI triple off the wall in right field by Rivers, prior to a four-run eruption by UAH in the top of the seventh – highlighted by a three-run homer to left by Bodine – which tied the game at 5-5.
 
UAH pulled ahead in the top of the eighth on an opposite-field, solo home run by Villalta, which jump-started another four-run rally to put UAH ahead at the final score of 9-5.
 
This was UAH's second all-time GSC postseason meeting with Shorter.
