HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team is set to open the 2022 campaign at Charger Park against Carson-Newman with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.

The series was originally scheduled to be a single game on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but rain in the region forced the postponement.

UAH is coming off the program's seventh berth to the NCAA tournament in the 2021 season, as the squad had a 23-20 overall record and a 16-14 mark in Gulf South Conference games.

Garrett Bodine and
Colin Brewer.

Bodine had a stellar 2021 season in which he led all UAH lineup regulars in batting average (.369), runs (42), hits (59), triples (6), total bases (97), walks (29), slugging percentage (.606), on-base percentage (.467) and steals (14), while Brewer – the Chargers primary backstop – owned a .321 batting average with nine doubles, two homers and 21 RBI.

The Chargers also return the top two starting pitchers from the 2021 campaign, including
Kody Keiser (61.1 IP) and
Tyler Self (63.2 IP). In his career, Self has tossed 202 innings with a 4.46 ERA.

UAH has a total of 26 home games in the 2022 season, which are the most scheduled home contests for the Chargers since 2016. The GSC home schedule begins on Feb. 26-27 against Union.
Carson-Newman enters the weekend with a 1-0 record with a midweek win over Milligan to start the 2022 season on Tuesday. The Eagles went 27-16 overall a year ago, under head coach Tom Griffin who is in his 16th season at the helm of C-N.
