Hancock Named South Region Field Athlete of the Year, Several Chargers Earn All-South Region

HUNTSVILLE | The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its regional award winners for the 2022 indoor season, and The University of Alabama in Huntsville was represented by Zach Hancock as South Region Field Athlete of the Year.
 
Hancock earns the honor after becoming an indoor All-American for the third time in his career with a seventh-place showing in the shot put with a toss of 18.00 meters at the 2022 NCAA Division II Track & Field Indoor Championships.
 
A native of Madison, Alabama, Hancock led the South Region with season-best marks of 18.25 meters in the shot put and 19.30 meters in the weight throw. He won both events at the 2022 Gulf South Conference Indoor Championships as well.
 
The USTFCCCA also recently unveiled its All-South Region performers with the Chargers being represented by 17 men's honorees and six women's awardees. UAH's 23 combined All-South Region performers led the GSC.
 
The Chargers men's All-South Region honorees include Justin Bensinger (shot put), Jacob Bishop (mile), Willie Campbell (triple jump), Cameron Clark (long jump, high jump), Michael Gizzi (60 meters, 200 meters), Hancock (weight throw, shot put), Garrison Hill (pole vault), Alex Howard (shot put), Thomas Jordan (heptathlon), Wilson McClain (60-meter hurdles), Trey McFarland (heptathlon), Stephen Tanner (weight throw, shot put), and Evans Wright (weight throw).
 
UAH's women's All-South Region performers include Emee Baldwin (pole vault), Lauren Hamm (pole vault), Zakiria Holifield (200 meters), Krystalynn Oatman (60 meters), and Ronni VanZant (pentathlon, 60-meter hurdles).
 
The Chargers continue the 2022 outdoor season at the NC State – Raleigh Relays from Thursday to Saturday and the Ole Miss Classic from Friday to Saturday in a split squad weekend.
