Sam Wilhelm Highlights USTFCCCA Indoor Regional Awards as South Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year

NEW ORLEANS | The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its indoor regional award winners, and the UAH track & field teams were well represented by Sam Wilhelm as the South Region Men's Indoor Athlete of the Year, three coaching awards and 43 combined All-South Region performers.
 
A native of Knob Noster, Missouri, Wilhelm earned a pair of All-America honors at the 2025 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, as he placed fifth in 3000 meters with a program-record time of 7:52.70 and also took ninth in 5000 meters.
 
He was previously named GSC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year after winning the 3000-meter race and guiding the Chargers distance medley relay team at the GSC Championships.
 
The Chargers men's program also saw David Cain earn South Region Men's Head Coach of the Year and Jacob Bishop garner South Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year.
 
Cain – in his 25th season as UAH head coach – led the Chargers to the program's first-ever men's GSC indoor championship while seeing his squad win seven events. The Chargers recorded six program records and had five NCAA Division II All-Americans.
 
In his second season at UAH, Bishop coached Charger distance runners to earn a school-record time of 9:41.03 in the distance medley relay, winning the GSC indoor title and qualifying for the 2025 NCAA DII Indoor Championships. He helped assist All-American Wilhelm to set program records in the 3000 and 5000 meters.
 
Additionally, Scott Byrd was named the USTFCCCA South Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year as he helped lead the Chargers to second place at the GSC indoor championships. He additionally aided in the performance of Jordyn Dortch, who was named a First Team All-American in 200 meters and was GSC individual champion in 200 meters and 60 meters.
 
The USTFCCCA also previously announced its All-South Region performers, with UAH notching 21 all-region honorees on the men's side and 22 on the women's team.
 
The Chargers women's All-South Region honorees include Dortch (60m, 200m, 4x400m), Sophia Knox (DMR), Amiah Murry (4x400m, 200m, 400m, triple jump), Summer Sutherlin (DMR, 4x400m), Anna Katherine Hopkins (DMR), Aniya Johnson (4x400m, 400m), Tamsyn Gibbs (DMR), A'Cynthia Brown (shot put), Jadlyn Debardlabon (long jump), Hallie Grace Williamson (pole vault), Grace Hampel (800m), Raegan Miller (pole vault), Kyla Rohling (triple jump), Hailey Smith (weight throw), and Sarah Tang (weight throw).
 
The UAH men's team featured All-South Region performers Chris Thomas (4x400m), Conner Patterson (DMR), Eon Morris (4x400m, DMR), Bryan Singleton (4x400m), Adam Taylor (DMR), Jaiden Young (4x400m), Wilhelm (5000m, 3000m, DMR), Wes Egalite (60m hurdles), Wes Ellison (800m), Noah George (5000m), Kian Johns (pole vault), Adolfo Mireles (pole vault, heptathlon), Sage Robertson (heptathlon), Adam Taylor (800 meters), Chris Thomas (200 meters), and Malik Turner (high jump, long jump).
 
UAH is now in the 2025 outdoor campaign, looking ahead to competitions at the NC State Relays, Texas Relays and UAB Spring Invitational from Thursday through Saturday.
