Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Stepping out of conference play for the final time at home, the UAH men's soccer team responded from Sunday's tough loss with a 2-0 win over visiting Concordia-Selma. The victory pushes the Charger record to 9-4 on the season.
The nine wins mark the most for the program since the 1998 squad went 13-5, and the team's seventh shutout of the season ties the previous school-record mark set by the 1997 and 1998 teams.
UAH dominated on this day, firing off 19 shots including nine that reached the target, while the Hornets were only able to place one of their seven shots on goal.
Picking up his ninth goal of the season, All-American candidate
Felix Hjalmarsson opened the scoring in the 39th minute. His first attempt caromed off the Concordia keeper right back to Hjalmarsson who then rifled it into the back of the net.
The Gulf South Conference leader in shots attempted 10 on the day.
Icing the contest, freshman
Kyle Simmons scored his 11th of the season to pull back even with Jose Ferraz of Christian Brothers for the goal-scoring lead in the GSC. His strike from in front came after a nice service across from
Juan Carlos Salazar that found
Cyprin Kanneh who fed it to the Huntsville native for the score.
Kel Markert stopped the one shot he faced to register his GSC-best fifth shutout of the season.
The Blue and White will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 26, when it travels to Clayton State for the penultimate contest of the regular season. The Chargers conclude the campaign with a pivotal contest against West Florida on Sunday, Oct. 30, at Charger Field.
