Box Score MORROW, Ga. – Kel Markert made seven impressive saves,
Kyle Simmons scored twice, and the UAH men's soccer team picked up a strong 3-2 road win at Clayton State on Wednesday night. With the win, the Chargers move to 10-4 while the Lakes drop to 8-7.
The road win at a quality opponent will help the Chargers in the NCAA South Region rankings. The latest edition of the poll came out earlier in the day, and UAH was ranked fifth.
Kel Markert was a huge part of the victory as Clayton State had several strong scoring chances throughout the contest that he was able to turn away.
The Chargers fell behind early as the hosts opened the scoring just under four minutes into the contest, but the Blue and White would not be deterred by the early deficit as it pressured the Clayton State defense through much of the opening half.
With 14 minutes left in the period, UAH had its best pair of chances to that point as the Laker keeper stopped a blast off the foot of
Ragnar Gunnarsson. With the goalie not able to control the rebound, the ball caromed around for a moment before landing in front of
Felix Hjalmarsson who rocketed it off the left post.
Less than two minutes later in the 32nd minute, the Chargers capitalized on another solid opportunity.
Mitch Wilson had it down the left side and fed a perfect cross to Hjalmarsson who was in the middle of the penalty box to bury it for his 10th goal of the season and send the game to halftime tied at 1-1.
After Markert and the Chargers fended off solid chance after solid chance by the home squad through the early stages of the second half,
Oscar Leon played a perfect ball forward to
Kyle Simmons who struck for the 12th time this season to put UAH up 2-1 in the 64th minute.
Sam Dean then found Simmons in the 78th minute to add an insurance goal, and UAH would need it as the Lakers were able to push one past Markert in the 88th minute.
On the night, Clayton State outshot UAH 21-14, but shots on goal were even at 10 per side. The contest was chippy as a total of 24 fouls were called with six cards issued.
The Chargers will close out the regular season at home on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 as West Florida visits.
