Men's Soccer Opens GSC Play With Victory

Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Winning in its first Gulf South Conference contest of the season, the UAH men's soccer team defeated visiting Harding by a 2-0 score on Friday afternoon at Charger Field. The win moves the Chargers to 6-3 (1-0 GSC) on the season while the Bisons fall to 3-8-1.

Thanks to three saves by Kel Markert in the opening 45 minutes, the contest was scoreless at the half and remained that way until the 77th minute.

Juan Carlos Salazar played the ball forward to Oscar Leon who then found freshman All-American candidate Kyle Simmons, and the Huntsville native deposited it into the goal for his GSC-leading ninth strike of the season.

Sealing the contest, Simmons got things started on UAH's second goal of the day. He passed it up ahead to Mitch Wilson who had a strong run towards the goal. His attempt likely would have found the back of the net, but to ensure the game-icing goal, Felix Hjalmarsson was there to kick it in for his fifth of the season.

The helper marks a team-best fourth for Wilson, while Simmons now has 20 points on the year with his three-point day – a mark that will likely move him into the top 20 nationally when the new stat rankings come out early next week.

Markert added a second-half save to finish the day with four as UAH posted its second clean sheet in a row.

UAH outshot the visitors by an 11-9 margin, while shots on goal were even at four for both teams.

The Chargers will continue GSC play on Sunday when they host Ouachita Baptist at 3:30 p.m. at Charger Field.
