Chargers Set To Start 2011-12 Campaign

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The nation's No. 2 team will open up the regular season on its own floor Monday night as the University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team is set to welcome Fisk to town for a 7:30 p.m. contest on Monday night at Spragins Hall.

Head Coach Lennie Acuff begins his 15th season at the helm of the Blue and White on Monday night, and he will look to build upon the most successful season in the school's NCAA history as he guided the Chargers to a 29-5 mark last year and a berth in the NCAA Elite Eight.

The Chargers played one exhibition contest during their preseason, narrowly falling to Division I's No. 17 team by a 67-60 score at Alabama.

Jaime Smith paced the squad on the night as he dropped 27 on the Crimson Tide including a 14-for-15 performance at the charity stripe, and the strong showing at the line for the junior should come as no surprise as he enters this season shooting a team-best 85 percent on free throws.

Should he maintain that pace, the guard could go down in the Gulf South Conference history books as one of the league's best free throw shooters as he currently sits ninth all-time.

Also writing his name into the GSC records is senior Josh Magette as he turned in the conference's second-best assist performance last season with 272, and he needs 155 this season to set the new career mark.

The Birmingham, Ala., native already owns the UAH career record for helpers with 583.

Magette and Smith were joined by Zane Campbell on the preseason All-GSC team to make UAH the only team with multiple representatives, and Magette and Campbell picked up numerous preseason All-American accolades.

Monday night's contest with Fisk marks the first meeting between the two schools.

Live coverage of the contest will be available at uahchargers.com, and fans are encouraged to follow the Chargers on Facebook (facebook.com/uahchargers) and on Twitter (@uahchargers).
