Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Using a balanced offensive attack, the No. 2 UAH men's basketball team opened the 2011-12 campaign with an 89-65 victory over visiting Fisk on Monday night at Spragins Hall. The Chargers open the season at 1-0 while Fisk falls to 0-3 on the year.
The Bulldogs hung close through the first 15 minutes of the contest, trailing the Blue and White by just a two-point margin at 30-28 with 5:02 left in the opening stanza, but the Chargers closed the period on a 13-0 run to lead 43-28 at the halftime break.
The string of Charger points continued into the second half as the hosts started the period out on a 13-2 run over the span of just over three minutes to see the lead balloon to 56-30, and UAH would go on to enjoy as much as a 34-point advantage as the game wound down.
Four of UAH's five starters all recorded double-digits in scoring led by
Jaime Smith who scored a game-high 16 points – including a 9-for-10 showing at the charity stripe – while adding seven assists. Registering a double-double,
Zane Campbell dropped 15 points while also grabbing a team-high 14 rebounds.
Xavier Baldwin collected 14 points on the evening, and
Josh Magette rounded out the double-figure scorers with 13 while adding a game-best eight assists.
The Chargers made 31 shots from the field, and with Magette's and Smith's strong performance leading the way, the team registered 25 assists on the night.
Strong off the bench,
Conner Blasi and
Ronnie Mack both added eight points, and Blasi grabbed eight boards.
UAH outshot the Bulldogs on the night by a 59.6 percent to 37.9 percent margin, and the Blue and White outrebounded Fisk by a 36-33 clip.
Hitting the road for its next four contests, the squad will travel to Salisbury, N.C. this weekend to take on St. Augustine's and Catawba at the Catawba Classic. Tip-off against St. Augustine's on Friday is slated for 3 p.m. CST.
