Box Score SEARCY, Ark. – The No. 18 UAH men's basketball team earned the revenge it wanted on Saturday, defeating Harding by a 67-63 score to avenge the loss the Bisons dished out to the Chargers earlier this year at Spragins Hall. UAH moves to 6-2 on the season while Harding drops to 4-3.
The Chargers started out the opening stanza strong, opening a quick 7-1 lead as
Zane Campbell was good on a pair of layups to key the run that lasted nearly the game's first three minutes.
From that point, the Bisons returned the favor with a 10-1 run to take an 11-8 lead over the Chargers at the 12:05 mark of the half. During that span, the Chargers went cold at their end as they ended up shooting just 29.6 percent from the field in the half.
Capitalizing on 13 turnovers by the Bisons in the frame, the Chargers were able to stay close even though Harding shot at a much better 43.5 percent clip as UAH scored eight points off the home team's miscues, and the teams went into the locker room at the halftime break with Harding holding a 28-25 advantage.
The Blue and White scored the first five points of the second half to regain the lead at 30-28 with 18:41 remaining in the contest, and displaying strong defense, the Chargers held Harding scoreless through nearly the first four minutes of the period to stay on top until the Bisons strung together a 4-0 run to grab the lead back at 15:23.
Strong in the half's opening minutes,
Jaime Smith scored 10 points in the first six minutes of the period including a pair of treys as UAH matched its largest advantage of the night at 38-32 at the 13:47 mark.
The advantage remained around that same margin through the next few minutes, and UAH built up a seven-point lead at 49-42 with 8:26 left.
Harding would trim the deficit down to one on two occasions late in the contest but could never push back on top as the Blue and White made eight of 10 free throws in the game's closing minutes. Six of those freebies came from
Josh Magette who scored 10 of his game-best 17 points at the charity stripe.
Joining Magette and Smith in double figures on the night was
Ronnie Mack who poured in 13 including the final two shots at the free throw line to ice the contest.
Xavier Baldwin led the Chargers on the glass as he grabbed seven rebounds, and Magette added eight assists.
The victory was impressive as UAH was outshot from the floor by a 48 to 36 percent clip, and Harding won the rebounding battle by a 36-29 margin.
The Chargers will return to action in Las Vegas on Thursday at 6 p.m. against Central Washington.
