HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The 18th-ranked UAH men's basketball team is set to take on a pair of teams from Washington state this week in Las Vegas as it will square off against Central Washington at 7 p.m. CST on Thursday before turning around to face Western Washington on Friday at 5 p.m. CST.
The Chargers enter the two-game set in the middle of a five-game road swing with a record of 6-2, and the team is coming off an important road win at Harding this past Saturday.
In that contest,
Josh Magette led the way with 17 points and eight assists as he helped guide the team to a 67-63 victory that avenged an earlier loss this season in Huntsville. Ten of Magette's points came at the free throw line as the Chargers sank a season-high 25 free throws on the night.
The win was impressive as the Chargers shot an atypical 36 percent from the floor. On the season, the Blue and White rank first in the GSC and 18th in the country with an overall field goal percentage of 51.4.
For the second time this season,
Xavier Baldwin against Harding led UAH in rebounding with seven rebounds, and the junior currently sits second on the squad on the glass with 5.0 rebounds per contest – a number that is nearly double what his career rebounding average was entering the season.
The Wildcats of Central Washington come to Las Vegas with a 6-2 mark - including a 78-77 victory over then-No. 3 BYU-Hawaii on Nov. 18.
Toussaint Tyler leads a group of five CWU players who are scoring in double figures as he scores 15.7 points per game, while Kevin Davis is strong on the boards, grabbing 9.4 rebounds per contest. As a team, the Wildcats are outscoring their opposition by a wide margin of nearly 17 points, scoring 86.5 points per game while limiting their opponents to an average of 69.6 points.
Western Washington – which would have been 27th in the national poll if it went that far – has a pair of wins against nationally ranked opponents within their 10-1 record as they also beat then-No. 3 BYU-Hawaii, and two games ago they knocked off then-No. 19 Seattle Pacific.
The Vikings are paced by Rory Blanche's 15.7 points per contest, while he also leads the squad in rebounding with an average of 7.2 per game.
Live stats and video for both games will be available at the tournament website, and the contests will also be carried on 97.7 The Zone and at 977thezone.com.
