HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The No. 17 UAH men's basketball team continues its homestand on Saturday when it welcomes West Florida to Spragins Hall for a 7 p.m. tilt. Both teams feature identical marks in Gulf South Conference play as the Chargers boast a record of 11-3 (2-1 GSC), while UWF visits the Rocket City at 11-5 (2-1 GSC).
It was just over a week ago that
Jaime Smith became the newest member of UAH's club of players to reach 1,000 career points, and now
Zane Campbell is on the verge of reaching the mark as well as he enters the West Florida contest with 987 points. If he should accomplish the feat, it would give the Chargers three 1,000-point scorers as
Josh Magette has already reached the plateau.
Campbell continues to shoot the ball well, registering a 61.0 shooting percentage from the field, and Smith continues to pace the team with a scoring average of 18.1 points per contest.
The Chargers gradually pulled away from Valdosta State on Thursday night, erasing an early deficit their last time out to claim an 86-72 victory over the Blazers.
Five UAH players scored in double figures, marking the eighth time this season that at least four Chargers have scored 10 or more in a contest, and it was the third consecutive time that five have accomplished the feat. Smith led UAH with 20 points, Magette notched his second consecutive - sixth overall - double-double with 18 points and 10 more assists.
With the 10 assists, Magette now needs just 25 to break the GSC record for assists in a career of 737 that was set in 1979. Averaging 9.3 helpers per game, the senior from Birmingham, Ala., is ranked first nationally in Division II in assists per game.
UAH will face its second straight opponent that owns an identical mark in GSC play as the Argos sit at 2-1 in league action after they knocked off North Alabama in Florence on Thursday night by a 79-68 score.
UWF - tops in the GSC in field goal percentage at 51.8 - was led by Marquis Mathis who poured in 21 points on the night. Three-time GSC Player of the Week Jamar Moore leads the Argos as he averages 16.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest.
UAH leads 23-14 in the all-time series with West Florida, and the Chargers have won six straight in the series. The last time UWF won was a 77-68 decision in 2007, and the Blue and White have not lost at home to the Argos since the 2003-04 season.
